Mendo In The Mitten: Capturing Michigan’s Cannabis Caregiver Community

As a videographer, I’ve had the privilege of stepping into a variety of worlds, but nothing quite prepared me for “Mendo In The Mitten,” a caregiver event hosted by Big Clouds in Jones, Michigan. It marked the first time I saw Michigan’s cannabis community in full form—a tangible result of the ongoing evolution of cannabis culture after what many consider the failure of the War on Drugs. Regardless of the fully legal cannabis market funneling all the money to rich investors, there were still many, many people who want to participate in the legal market. Fees and requirements to own expensive licenses keep these people out.

What stood out to me was the vastness of this community. I had no idea how many people were connected by their shared passion for cannabis, stretching far beyond what I’d imagined. “Mendo In The Mitten” takes its name from the headliners, The Mendo Dope Boys, a rap group from northern California known for their unique blend of cannabis culture and music. Alongside them, a lineup of electronic artists and bands kept the energy high throughout the event.

Over two days, I followed the action closely. I camped in an open field, my camera never far from reach, ready to capture circus performers, live music, and the general spirit of the event. The vendors were eager to kick off the year with this gathering, and the entire Big Cloud family seemed thrilled to be hosting. It wasn’t just about the music or the acts—there was a sense of community that I hadn’t experienced before.

Through my lens, I got to know the people behind this scene, making new friends along the way. The whole experience was a reminder of how diverse and lively this world can be when people come together over something they’re passionate about. “Mendo In The Mitten” wasn’t just another gig for me—it was an eye-opening adventure into a world I’ll continue to explore.
